Spam Emails

These kinds of emails are commercial messages that you didn’t sign up for or ask for, which
usually offer you great looking deals. The emails can sometimes contain links to viruses such as
malware, or links to criminal sites that intend to get your bank details. Be aware of these emails
and don’t open them!

Viruses

Once you’ve got a computer virus, you’ll find your machine works a lot slower, becomes
damaged, or is used by criminals in one way or another. Make sure you have up to date security
software to prevent viruses contaminating your computer.

Scams

If you are contacted by a certain company and aren’t sure whether they’re legit, Google their
business name and read reviews on them. You should also only ever online shop on websites
that start with https:// as that means it’s secure. Remain vigilant and remember that if something
looks too good to be true then it most likely will be. You could find scams on any kind of product
or website, from makeup to cars. You should only ever buy from a reputable retailer when
buying anything online from cooking utensils to high end cars.

Identity Fraud

If an online criminal manages to get hold of your personal details, they can use them for all
manner of things, including; opening bank accounts, taking out credit cards, loans, benefits, and
much more. Be very careful about where you publish your information on the internet, especially
Facebook and your own personal blog. Cyber criminals are very smart and can check all of your
social networking sites and blogs to get the full picture.

Cyberbullying & Trolling

Cyberbullying is bullying done online. If the internet is being used to intimidate somebody,
harass them, send them threatening messages, spread rumours, set up a hate site, and things
of a similar nature, then it’s classed as cyberbullying. Cyberbullying can sometimes be worse
than real life bullying, as the messages of hate can get to you wherever you are, even in the
comfort of your own home. You probably won’t know who is bullying you either - but if it gets
serious the police can get involved and investigate the computer and phone used.
